Mission Statement
In
the context of the ACBF mandate,
the
Library and Information Centres
mission is to enable staff and
other users to obtain with the
greatest speed, convenience and
economy, materials and information
needed in the execution of their
duties.
The Role of the
Library and Information Centre
The
Library and Information Centre
performs the role of providing
in-house automated bibliographical
and reference services to ACBF
staff in support of their ongoing
projects as well as acting as an
information and reference center
in capacity building literature
to local and foreign researchers,
policy-makers, staff and members
of other organizations, government
ministries, tertiary institutions;
public sector; private sector and
civil society.
Collection
The
library collection is strong in
the development field in Sub-Saharan
Africa; economic policy analysis
and management; financial management
and accountability; national statistics;
public administration and management;
professionalization of the voices
of the private sector and civil
society; national parliaments;
gender issues and other areas of
interest. The library collection
is constantly reviewed and renewed
to meet current and anticipated
organizational needs in priority
areas. The library has a collection
of 10,000 books, pamphlets, reports
and other documents. The library
receives over 25 newsletters and
subscribes to 30 Serials titles.

Online Library Program
ACBF
digitalized its Library and Information
Centre, to create a virtual library
that offers online services to
its clientele (catalogue, circulation,
reference functions, etc) bibliographic
information and the full-text of
articles, in books, journals, magazines
and conference proceedings in electronic
form.
The Centre uses Winnebago Spectrum Web Catalog, an Internet public access catalog
(IPAC).

Borrower Privileges
and Responsibilities
Members may borrow four books at a time for a period of two weeks with one
extension allowed on unreserved materials.
Membership
Membership is
entirely free to all ACBF community
and stakeholders. Applicants
for membership are requested
to support the application form
with a letter of recommendation
from their Head of Institution.
Library Services
Catalog
(Online Public Access Catalog
- OPAC) Databases
The online catalog reflects the materials that are owned by ACBF Library
and Information Centre. You can search it by author, title, subject, keyword,
or call number. The database contains books, CDs and AVS, periodicals and
computer files materials.
The Library has also taken out licenses to many digital resources and electronic
access is provided via its web site to more than 500 journals; to many bibliographic,
full-text and numeric databases as well as to many web-based resources.
Service
to its members
Spectrum
WebConnect connects one to the
World Wide Web - directly from
the Spectrum Catalog - and makes
nearly any image, document, or
web site a searchable part of the
collection. Spectrum displays hyperlinks
for author and subject tags in
the details windows, allowing quick
exploration of related topics and
authors. The Library and Information

ACBF Information Gateway is part
of the Information Services interface
with other capacity building institutions
worldwide. The function of the
Information Gateway is to make
available to stakeholders and individuals
information resources of the ACBF,
and through existing Library infrastructure
(interlibrary loans and electronic
information networks), that of
the wider world. The Information
Gateway is committed to providing
an effective, innovative and client-centered
quality service to its members.
