Workshop on “Strengthening
National and Regional Capacities for
Analyzing and Addressing Migration And
Development Issues.”

The African Capacity Building Foundation
(ACBF) and the International Organization
for Migration (IOM) will be holding a
joint workshop in Harare, Zimbabwe on “Strengthening
National and Regional Capacities for
Analyzing and Addressing Migration and
Development Issues” on 25-27 October
2005. The overall objective of the workshop
is to strengthen the capacity of participating
governments to identify synergies and
points of contact between migration,
development, and human resource development
agendas, to develop a common policy language,
and to discuss responses to the issues
pertaining to the nexus between migration
and development.
The workshop will explore responses
to the following questions, among others:

How are migration issues related to the
implementation of the MDGs, and
thus to the development of effective strategies
of Human Resource Development
and capacity building?

How can regional and international frameworks
such as the Millennium Development
Goals and NEPAD and TICAD strategies for Human
Resource Development be incorporated
in national policy and practice?
-
What are effective regional, country
and sectoral approaches to retention,
mobilization and utilization
of human resources and capacities?
-
How can Governments achieve policy coherence
in the implementation of Human
Resource Development strategies, development agendas
such as the MDGs, and migration
policies?
-
How can Diasporas
resources be mobilized effectively
to fill capacity
gaps in countries of origin, particularly in
terms of health
personnel?
-
What actions can
be developed at departmental and administrative
levels to enhance the development impact of migrants’ remittance?
-
What
are the particular gender issues in each sector
and how can the contribution of female migrants to the development
of their
home countries and communities be maximized?
