The African Union Commission Chairperson H.E. Dr. Nkosazana Dlamini Zuma says that capacity is critical for resource mobilization towards Africa’s development.  At a meeting with the African Capacity Building Foundation (ACBF) Executive Secretary, Prof Nnadozie at the African Union secretariat in Addis Ababa, Ethiopia on Thursday, she said, “Once you have capacity, finance will follow”.

During the meeting, Prof. Nnadozie briefed the H.E Dr. Dlamini Zuma the role ACBF plays in the overall development of Africa as well as ACBF’s involvement with the African Union.

“My team and I at the ACBF are truly dedicated to supporting the AUC (African Union Commission),” Prof. Nnadozie noted.  “Particularly we are engaged in capacitating African institutions and the people.  To this end, we are working on the immediate implementation of Agenda 2063, regional integration and coordination between the AUC and Regional Economic Commissions (RECs),” he underscored.

Agenda 2063 is a global strategy to optimize use of Africa’s resources for the benefit of all Africans.

Dr. Dlamini Zuma also acknowledged the important role played by the ACBF. She expressed gratitude to the Foundation for its continued support and working relationship with the AUC.  She further called on Prof. Nnadozie to continue to be engaged in the process of capacitating the AUC.

The ACBF is set to commit three million dollars through a grant agreement to capacitate AUC.

At the end of the meeting, both Prof. Nnadozie and Dr. Dlamini Zuma, noted the importance of capacity building in moving Africa forward, and agreed to continue to work together in building the capacity of the continent at large and the AUC in particular.

Prof. Nnadozie, reaffirmed Dr. Dlamini Zuma that the ACBF will remain committed and engaged with the AUC.

Established in 1991, ACBF builds human and institutional capacity for good governance and economic development in Africa. To date, the Foundation has empowered governments, parliaments, civil society, private sector and higher education institutions in more than 45 countries and 6 regional economic communities. ACBF supports capacity development with grants, technical assistance and knowledge across Africa.

The recognition of ACBF as the African Union’s Specialized Agency for Capacity Development launches the beginning of a new era for capacity building by ACBF, which will require an appropriate level of political commitment and financial support from all stakeholders.

The remarkable achievements ACBF has registered over the past 26 years is not by accident in our opinion. They have come through hard work, dedication, commitment, purposeful leadership, support from the member countries as well as productive partnership building.

Africa needs ACBF as much, probably more now, than at the time it was created in 1991.
