The African Capacity Building Foundation (ACBF) is a premier institution dedicated to capacity development in Africa. With a membership comprising 40 African countries, the African Development Bank (AfDB), the United Nations Development Programme (UNDP), and the World Bank, ACBF focuses on enhancing human capital development and institutional strengthening to address current and future developmental challenges. The Foundation supports all sectors including public, private, civil society, and academia, with a particular emphasis on improving the effectiveness of Africa’s public sector institutions at country, regional, and continental levels, positioning them as key drivers of sustainable and transformative change.

The Foundation was established in 1991 to address Africa’s severe capacity gaps. To date, ACBF has supported over 70 higher education institutions, including universities across all sub-Saharan African regions, in reforming curriculums that address the economic requirements of their countries and equipped universities with libraries that enable students to conduct research online. The Foundation has trained more than 50,000 personnel in civil service, most of whom hold key positions in Ministries of Finance, Planning or Economic Development and Central Banks across the continent.

The Foundation’s Strategic Plan (2023-2027) focuses on human capacity development and institution building in four impact areas: Climate Change & Energy for productive use, Agribusiness & Food Sovereignty, Trade as an engine of economic development and Economic & Social Governance.

ACBF seeks to recruit a Programme Support Intern within the Climate and Energy Unit in Accra, Ghana to support the development and implementation of Climate and Energy initiatives within the Foundation.

Main Duties and Responsibilities:

Under the leadership of the Programme Coordinator of Climate Change Unit:

  • Actively participate as a member of the Program Team, contributing to the ACBF project development, implementation, and achievement,
  • Contribute to the planning of the implementation of all program activities in accordance with the goals of the project and annual operational plans,
  • Assist the the climate unit in developing progress reports, reviewing project reports, and work plans, and implementing mission’s recommendations.
  • Coordinate activity implementation, both internally and with partners.
  • Support the development and management of partnerships and networks for the delivery of an impactful program ensuring the delivery of ACBF’s value add.
  • Undertake relevant research and contribute to business development initiatives relevant to expand the climate portfolio.
  • Assist in providing relevant information and analysis to support strategic and operational decision-making,
  • Participate in the research, development and dissemination of ACBF knowledge products.
  • Undertake research and information gathering to support program delivery, and business development within the Program and Impact Department.
    • Support quality review of documents submitted by consultants
    • Arrange and attend meetings/workshops/events as required and prepare suitable documentation and material accordingly.
    • Support correspondence in response to requests for support and notify beneficiaries of ACBF decisions.
    • Assist the unit in responding to various requests from other units and consolidate contributions from Program Officers and Experts for Management consideration.
    • Perform all other duties assigned by the Programs Coordinator

Desired Qualifications, Competencies, and Experience

  • A minimum of a master’s degree in environmental science, Economics, Development Studies, Public Policy, or related field.
  • A minimum of 2 years’ experience preferably in international organizations and or African based Think Tanks.
  • Strong project management skills, deadline management, sense of responsibility and accountability and the ability to effectively multi-task.
  • Demonstrate experience in conducting research or working around themes related to climate change adaptation, energy consumption, deforestation, etc.
  • Demonstrated experience in writing policy briefs, concept notes etc.
  • Demonstrate experience in organizing training workshops, with think tanks or international organizations.
  • A thorough understanding of political, economic, and social trends as it relates the climate change and adaptions in Africa.
  • Ability to work independently under minimum supervision and be accountable.
  • Capable of handling high stress while maintaining a positive attitude.
  • Powerful conceptual and analytical skills, with a track record in using data and analytics to inform dynamic strategy implementation, priority setting, and decision-making.
  • Experience in communicating externally, either in large groups, or in smaller engagements for representational and influencing purposes
  • Strong communication and writing skills.
  • Fluency in English  and working knowledge of French will be an added advantage
  • Excellent writing, research, and analytical skills
  • Excellent interactive and interpersonal skills and the ability to work in a multicultural 
    environment.
