In 1999, the Ethiopian Development Research Institute (EDRI) was formed as a semi-autonomous policy institute hosted under the Office of the Prime Minister. In December 2001 the Executive Board of ACBF approved a grant of US$ 1.5 million to EDRI Phase I. The grant was aimed at supporting EDRI to undertake policy analysis and research, targeted at benefitting the public and private sectors, and civil society in Ethiopia. At its 39th Regular Meeting, in April 2008, the Executive Board approved a grant of US$ 1.2 million for EDRI Phase II.
The overall goal of EDRI was to enhance the capacity of the Institute to fulfill its mandate to provide policy advice to the Ethiopian Government and other stakeholders, thereby contributing to the achievement of the country’s Plan for Accelerated and Sustained Development to end Poverty, 2006 – 2010 (PASDEP).The expected results were to:
- Increase the coverage and scope of the research and policy analysis undertaken at EDRI
- Government of Ethiopia and other stakeholders to benefit from relevant and useful policy advice from EDRI leading to policy formulation that will contribute to Ethiopia’s economic growth and poverty reduction.
- Increased participation in the policy making process by the private sector and civil society
- It is also expected that during the implementation of EDRI II, there would be improved implementation and monitoring of PASDEP (2006 –2010).
