The NEPAD Secretariat was created in October 2001 to assist the Head of States and Government Implementation Committee set up in accelerating the implementation of NEPAD. In December 2004, the Executive Board approved a grant of US$ 2 million to the Strengthening the Institutional Capacity of the NEPAD Secretariat project.

The specific objectives of the project are: i) to strengthen the institutional capacity of the NEPAD Secretariat through supporting of strategic organizational functions; and ii) to enhance the operational capacity of selected program clusters in order to facilitate implementation of priority programs.The project will has two major components: i) Institutional and Organizational Development Support; and ii) Program Delivery Capacity Support. Activities include,

  • Strengthening of human capacity of the Secretariat for core strategic management functions by targeting the key support services including a senior level position that will coordinate delivery of departments and units against targets set in business plans.
  • Enhancement of the organizational effectiveness of the NEPAD Secretariat through review of organizational structure, functions, systems and procedures development.
  • Strengthening the human capacity of the Secretariat by attracting qualified personnel for key administrative and management functions and by contributing to the establishment of conditions conducive for retention of qualified professionals to ensure continuity and continuous improvement in work processes and learning in the organization.
