The Association of Non-Governmental Organizations, TANGO, founded in 1983, is the umbrella organization for NGOs operating in The Gambia. It has a membership of local and international NGOs who work to improve the capacity of its members and civil society as a whole.

The overall objective of the TANGO project was to contribute to the capacity development of NGOs/CBOs in The Gambia to influence public policy processes and implementation for the promotion of people centered development. The specific objectives were:

  1. To strengthen TANGO to enable it to coordinate, facilitate and galvanize the voices of Non-Governmental Organizations/Community-Based Organizations on development issues;
  2. To strengthen the consultative mechanisms established under GICAP to influence public policy processes;
  3. To enhance integration of gender issues in NGOs/CBOs for effective engagement in public dialogue; and
  4. To increase information flow, networking and interface among NGOs/CBOs and with other stakeholders.
